Islamic fundamentalists clearly understand the damage that homosexual behavior inflicts on a culture. This is why they repress such behavior by death...It may be brutal at times, but any culture that is able to produce wave after wave of suicide bombers... is a culture that at least knows how to value self sacrifice.
Basically a Catholic bishop in the United States (for those of you who aren't so good at geography, Guam is a US territory) just held up Islamic fundamentalist suicide bombers as examples to which we should aspire because they have no qualms about using murder to repress gay people.
The statement was made in response bill in the Guam legislature which would legalize same sex domestic partnerships. The effort to pass the bill is led by B.J. Cruz, an openly gay legislator who was – wait for it – abused by a priest when he was a child.
Un. Fucking. Believable.

As I said via email: that's the trouble with Catholicism. It's members have no say in its leadership. Laypeople don't elect these asshats. At the same time, this also means that if there's one they disagree with fundamentally, they will with no qualms. Because they will see that leader as an asshat.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't the first time the Archbishop of Guam has said stupid shit. But no Catholic wants to be a suicide bomber - despite the glorification of martyrdom in the Bible. If many of them don't like/aren't comfortable with gays, they hate Islamic Fundamentalists more. Most Catholics, if they even know about what he said, would probably be shocked by the comparison and/or ignore it. So is this guy an asshat? Yes. But does he actually have any sway over what people actually think and do and how they act or what they vote for? Not necessarily.
Also, he's the Archbishop of GUAM. Like, who cares? It'd be different if the Archbishop of New York Diocese said this shit. But Guam? Really?
