Stop the Presses: Week of 11/3/08

Red Sex, Blue Sex (The New Yorker): New Yorker contributor Margaret Talbot takes a look at the different attitudes of evangelical Christians surrounding sex. She finds that the more socially conservative the area and the lower the age of sexual activity, the higher the instance of teen pregnancy. "Social liberals in the country's 'blue states' tend to support sex education and are not particularly trouled by the idea that many teen-agers have sex before marriage, but would regard a teen-age daughter's pregnancy as devastating news," she writes. "And the social conservatives in 'red states' generally advocate abstinence-only education and denounce sex before marriage, but aare relatively unruffled if a teen-ager becomes pregnant, as long as she doesn't choose to have an abortion." A fascinating article.
